Long before clocks, Japan split the day into twelve slices, each named after an animal of the zodiac. A trace of that system still hides in the modern language: "noon" is shogo (正午), built from the kanji for horse, because midday fell in the Hour of the Horse. That's also why "a.m." and "p.m." are gozen (午前) and gogo (午後) — literally "before the horse" and "after the horse."
